How to Rank Honkai Star Rail Characters
Not all tier lists are built the same. Here’s the framework that actually matters when evaluating HSR characters for the current meta — especially if you’re thinking about who to pull next.
| Metric | Weight | What to Look For |
|---|---|---|
| Endgame Performance (MoC / PF / AS) | 35% | Can they clear Memory of Chaos, Pure Fiction, and Apocalyptic Shadow consistently at E0? Multi-mode versatility beats single-mode dominance. |
| Team Flexibility | 25% | Do they fit into multiple archetypes, or are they locked to one specific comp? Characters requiring niche supports rank lower. |
| Damage Output / Role Efficiency | 20% | DPS characters judged on ceiling damage and SP economy; supports judged on buff uptime and team-wide impact. |
| Skill Point Economy | 10% | SP-hungry kits drag down entire teams. SP-positive or SP-neutral characters are much easier to build around. |
| Accessibility (E0, No Signature LC) | 10% | How strong is the character without their signature Light Cone or high Eidolons? F2P viability counts. |
Who’s Worth Debating in 2026
The Untouchable Tier: Current Meta Kings & Queens
Castorice is the character everyone’s talking about in Version 4.2. A Quantum Remembrance DPS, she summons her Netherwing and uses party HP to fuel devastating AoE damage. Her “HP-sacrifice and HP-restoration” mechanic is genuinely unique — and genuinely broken in the right hands. Pair her with Tribbie and a healer like Hyacine or Luocha and she melts every endgame mode.
Ruan Mei refuses to leave S-tier no matter how many patches drop. Her team-wide buffs, Break efficiency boosts, and action delay mechanics make her the single best generalist support in the game. Nearly every competitive comp either uses her or wishes it could.
Firefly still dominates as the queen of Break compositions. Her self-sufficient kit, massive HP scaling, and Super Break synergy let her carry teams even without a full constellation of premium supports. She’s one of the safest long-term investments in the entire roster.
Robin is the backbone of every follow-up attack team. Her Ultimate provides an enormous damage boost and action advance, and she works seamlessly with units like Feixiao and Topaz. One of the most pull-worthy characters ever released.
Rising Stars: The New Blood
Tribbie arrived in Version 4.2 Phase 2 and immediately reshuffled the entire meta. A Quantum Harmony support, her kit revolves around universal buffs — RES PEN, Vulnerability, and Additional DMG — that scale with her Max HP. She triggers follow-up attacks based on ally Ultimate frequency, making her an absolute monster in dual-DPS teams with Castorice or Mydei. She’s the new Ruan Mei in terms of “just put her in everything.”
Mydei is an Imaginary Destruction DPS whose Skill consumes his own HP to deal escalating Blast DMG. Stack Charge, enter Vendetta state, and watch him unleash AoE carnage. He synergizes brilliantly with Castorice — his HP consumption feeds her Newbud mechanic — making the dual-DPS pairing genuinely one of the strongest comps in 4.2.
The Herta (Big Herta) is an Ice Erudition powerhouse who keeps printing value in any content that features multiple enemies. She and Tribbie have direct energy synergy that lets both characters cycle their kits faster, and she remains a top-tier choice for Pure Fiction with or without premium supports.
Legacy Names: Still Earning Their Keep
Acheron is technically off her peak but still devastates in a tuned Nihility comp. Her Ultimate damage is jaw-dropping, and Kafka + Black Swan DoT teams (now upgraded with Hysilens) remain competitive in stages with CRIT-reduction mechanics. She needs more support babysitting now than she did at release, but she’s far from retired.
Sparkle remains one of the best skill-point batteries in the game. Any hypercarry DPS loves having her in the lineup for the SP generation and CRIT DMG buff. She’s not flashy in 2026, but she’s dependable — the kind of support you always have room for.
Feixiao is still one of the most consistent Hunt DPS characters in the game. Her follow-up attacks generate reliable single-target damage, and she pairs naturally with Robin for one of the cleanest team compositions in the current meta.
Wildcards: Underrated or Situational
Gallagher is a 4-star sustain who belongs in a much higher bracket than players give him credit for. He’s elite specifically in Break teams (thanks to his Besotted debuff enabling healing procs), and he remains the best free sustain option for players who haven’t pulled Hyacine or Lingsha.
Boothill is a Break DPS who gets wildly slept on. His single-target damage in the right setup rivals much more expensive investment options, and he particularly shines in Apocalyptic Shadow thanks to his fire weakness targeting.
Tier List Rules: Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | The Fix |
|---|---|
| Rating characters based on story mode | Story difficulty doesn’t reflect endgame potential. Always evaluate characters in MoC, PF, or AS context. |
| Assuming E6 / signature LC performance is baseline | Most players are E0. Rate the character at E0 with a best 4-star Light Cone — that’s the honest comparison. |
| Ignoring team comp and calling a character bad | Acheron in a wrong team looks C-tier. Acheron in a tuned Nihility comp is terrifying. Context matters hugely in HSR. |
| Ranking support characters by their personal damage | Ruan Mei’s damage is irrelevant. Her value is the 20–40% total team DPS increase she enables. Judge supports by their team impact. |
| Not accounting for the current game mode meta | Pure Fiction rewards AoE, Apocalyptic Shadow rewards single-target sustain, MoC is a mix. A character who’s god-tier in one mode might be average in another. |
